The k42 is without doubt one of the most spectacular buildings on the shores of Lake Constance and establishes new accents as well as setting new benchmarks. The exterior glas facade radiates transparency and openness and soon became an attraction for young and old.
The former salt storage building, used by a bank since 1967, had been standing empty since the year 2002. In 2004, the distict council, basing its decision on the plans of a project group, resolved to convert the building into a combined business centre and house of media. As a result, the building was completely restructured - the foundation walls are the sole remaining elements of the original form.
Following less than two years of construction, the first companies were able to move in at the end of 2006 and in March 2007 the town library opened its doors, under the new name of "Medienhaus am See" (House of Media on the Lake). The highlight of the new collection of buildings is the round, pebble-shaped event hall - "Der Kiesel" - literally "The Pebble".
Readings, theatre and concerts are held in the hall on a regular basis. By the way, the name k42 is derived from the fact that the building stands in Karlstraße, at number 42!
